Do you prefer small and cozy, or are you looking for the most space possible for your house dollar?
One current trend in the real estate industry is something a bit counter intuitive….. buying a smaller house when you may get a larger one for a similar price. Sometimes these homes are called “cottage style” or “jewel box” homes. There seems to be two typical buyers for these homes, empty nesters and first time buyers (young professionals). These cozy homes are usually a little less expensive (depending on location) than the larger ones, and also easier to maintain.
Here in the Bellingham area, we have new communities being built that are reminiscent of traditional Craftsman bungalows, but include features that you may not get with the older turn of the century homes they are mimicking. They now feature high end materials, appliances and flooring. Most are built “green”, including solar power options, eco friendly materials, and very energy efficient heating/cooling systems.
In the past, small homes were usually built on traditional single lots, but with local building zoning requirements regarding growth management, we are now seeing full communities built in this small home, easy maintenance style. If the small home style is something that appeals to you, contact me for info on where these homes are being offered in the area.
